Tuska is considered the largest metal festival in the Nordic countries.
I was at the 2009 and am definitely planning to attend this year again, hopefully.
A nice and very friendly festival, great location, great atmosphere, no hassle at all. Right in the centre of HKI, within walking distance from all major rock/metal venues.
The only possible drawback is that the headliners finish sort of early (being in a residential area and all), but you can always hang out in the surrounding park and drink or hit the nearby pubs, while waiting for the clubs to open.
The evening club programme, the so-called Tuska jatko-klubi, is also worth mentioning.

I attended Tuska in 07 and 08 and I can say that this is definitely an awesome location for a metal festival, being right in the center of the city, and within walking distance to many hotels and places to eat.

There are normally three stages set up within close distance to each other and it’s not too crowded unlike Wacken or other larger fests. When the shows are over by the ‘early’ evening (about 9-10pm), you can then go and visit the many bars or venues in Helsinki (Tavastia, Nosturi, etc) that host other metal bands for the official (or unofficial) after hours shows. Highly recommended!
